Janet Devlin is 16 years old and comes from a small village of Gortin in Northern Ireland. As she puts it her house is in the middle of nowhere and it is pretty big. Since Gortin is a rather boring place where nothing really happens, she was immediately recognized when she got back home from her first audition. She spends a lot of time by herself in her room- reading writing and singing. Janet is quite shy by nature and says she lacks self-confidence what makes it difficult for her to get out in front of an audience. At school she was not one of the cool kids. She dressed in black and often did not speak a word to anyone even for days.
She has been into music since she was seven and X Factor was a huge contrast to everything she has ever done before in her life. The very fact she was able to fly to London to take part in auditions was huge itself not mentioning moving forward to the life shows. She said it hadn’t been easy for her to build up the confidence that would allow her to live up to other people’s expectations. Popularity is not something that she signed up for and is a bit overwhelming just line fan mail she receives.
Janet is aware the X Factor competition could be life changing for and she hopes it is. It is the pinnacle of everything she has ever done not only singing wise but globally. Her biggest desire is to grow as a person and she can't do that from where she lives. Every step of the competition is really huge for her as she is not so confident as the rest of the contestants. Building up the confidence to go a little further each time is difficult but essential to get by.
After progressing to the live shows, Janet says, nothing will be normal anymore and it can change my life forever, it means everything to me.
Music is most important to her. She wants to stay true to herself, meaning she won't pretend to be someone she is not even if it meant losing the competition. As she told the journalists, she'd rather lose than compromise her integrity. Having respect and staying true to herself seems really important. She says she is not the stereotypical package of X Factor and has no intention to be.
